How Stagecoach is cutting emissions today, without waiting for 2035
Hear directly from Stagecoach and the Argent Fuels team on how the fuel switch worked in practice. Watch below.
Electrification is progressing, but diesel fleets won’t disappear overnight. For many operators, the path to net zero may involve more than one technology. If you’re running HGVs, buses or coaches that are still years from going electric, Stagecoach’s story shows how you can reduce emissions today with a simple switch, all while continuing to plan for what comes next.

Stagecoach’s challenge
Stagecoach’s challenge
Stagecoach has committed to a 100% electric fleet by 2035 – but electrification takes time, and the diesel buses on the road today couldn’t simply wait for that transition to complete.
“There’s this bridge we need to build,” Greg Ritt, Group Head of Sustainability at Stagecoach said. A practical way to cut emissions from the existing diesel fleet now, without disrupting operations or committing to costly interim vehicle changes, while electrification continues in parallel.
The pressure wasn’t just to commit to a long-term target. Stagecoach wanted to be proactive, taking real steps now rather than waiting for the 2035 electrification goal to be reached. Using Dieselite alongside the electrification programme already underway meant emissions could start coming down straight away, for the diesel vehicles already on the road.

The ambition of Stagecoach is to have an EV fleet by 2035. But there’s this bridge we need to build, which is Dieselite and increasing that biofuel percentage.” Greg Ritt, Group Head of Sustainability at Stagecoach
The solution
The solution
Dieselite was rolled out across the business as a drop-in lower carbon fuel. Not as a limited trial, but with over 7,000 diesel buses across Stagecoach’s network now running on the fuel. Supply has grown year on year, expanding into more regions until reaching full nationwide coverage.

No new vehicles. No infrastructure changes. No changes to existing engineering processes. Dieselite fits seamlessly into leading bus operators daily fleet operations.
Stagecoach initially used Dieselite B10 (10% biodiesel), progressing to Dieselite B12 (12% biodiesel) and then Dieselite B20 (20% biodiesel) between May and August 2026 to achieve greater carbon savings. From September 2026, the blend will return to Dieselite B12 to maintain performance through the winter months.
Dieselite for us is a simple solution. We don’t have to change any products. We don’t have to change any processes. It just fits seamlessly within an existing engineering environment.” Greg Ritt, Group Head of Sustainability at Stagecoach
The results
The results, verified
- Supplied across 7,000 buses
- Used in more than 100 depots
- Deployed across 15 regions
- 83,567 tonnes CO₂e reduced (well-to-wheels) when used as an alternative to fossil fuel diesel*
- 11% average lifecycle GHG reduction achieved to date
- Supports Stagecoach’s wider decarbonisation strategy

Why Dieselite?
why dieselite?
Immediate emissions reductions
By using a fuel with a higher blend of waste-based biodiesel, you displace fossil fuel and reduce emissions from existing diesel fleets today, without waiting for vehicle replacement programmes.
Seamless implementation
No vehicle modifications, infrastructure changes or operational disruption.
Comparable cost to standard diesel
No premium to pay. Dieselite is priced in line with standard road diesel, so switching is a straightforward operational decision – not a budget conversation.
Verified reporting
Certified emissions savings with auditable data to support sustainability reporting.
When comparing lower-carbon fuel options, cost, security of supply and ease of adoption are important considerations. Produced in the UK, Dieselite has been developed with these practical needs in mind.

It was really easy to bring Dieselite on board. No modifications are required. It’s a great stepping stone from where we’ve been to where we’re going in the future” Anthony Seeds, Engineering Manager at Stagecoach
*Figures cover the period April 2024 to December 2025, during which Stagecoach used Dieselite. Lifecycle GHG reduction figure is based on verified fuel volumes supplied to Stagecoach, as recorded and certified within the Renewable Fuels Assurance Scheme (RFAS) declarations. CO₂ reductions are calculated using the UK Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) / Renewable Energy Directive (RED) lifecycle methodology, comparing the carbon intensity of waste-derived biodiesel with the fossil diesel comparator and applying this to the fuel volumes supplied during the period.
